The design for this two-story residence and guest house in South Austin is inspired by vernacular Balinese architecture and mid-century Bohemian influences. The house balances indoor and outdoor living with a large lap pool between the main house and an open pool pavilion that provides an opportunity for escape and relaxation. Interior living space extends into the outdoors via a covered patio adjacent to the pool. The simple steel trellis covering the pool area offers a shady retreat, in contrast to the expansive glazed façade that confronts and overlooks the pool edge. Decorative tiles and ornate tapestries are contrasted against simple block walls, and exposed steel & timber framing. Other features include custom steel windows and doors, in addition to a playful yard for the family's pet tortoise.
